Bleeding Gums

How to stop bleeding gums

To show you how to stop bleeding gums, this article explains the causes, shows you what healthy gums should look like, and also how to stop your gums bleeding in future.

What Causes Bleeding Gums?

Gums bleed when there is gum disease (gingivitis) present. Bleeding will be seen after brushing, when the gums have been stimulated by the toothbrush. This is not normal or healthy.

What do healthy gums look like?

Healthy gums always have the same characteristics. The gums look pale pink, they are firm and fit tightly around the teeth.

Close inspection shows the gums have a stippled appearance like the skin of an orange. Healthy gums stand up to the pressures of eating hard foods and brushing.

What does gingivitis look like?

Unhealthy gums are red and swollen. Instead of the “orange peel,” stippled appearance, they are swollen and shiny.

These gums will bleed when they are brushed, but they will not be painful at this stage.

What has caused the gum disease?

A biofilm of bacteria in dental plaque is the cause. The bacteria have been left on the teeth long enough to produce toxins (poisons) which cause the gums to become inflammed.

Does it matter if my gums bleed?

The long term consequences of ignoring bleeding gums can be:

  • Bad Breath
  • Bad Taste
  • Bone supporting the teeth starts to dissolve away
  • Gum recession
  • Pain caused by infection
  • Sensitivity
  • Teeth become loose
  • Teeth may move and look ugly
  • Teeth may fall out or need to be taken out

Can Mouthwashes solve the problem?

The bacterial plaque is sticky and tenacious. Mouthwashes do not remove sufficient plaque and some mouthwashes stain teeth brown or contain alcohol or acids which are detrimental to teeth.
